What is EMDR?

What is EMDR?

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy proven to reduce physical and mental disturbances related to traumatic memories, while increasing tolerance to overall daily stress. It is an effective treatment for trauma symptoms and trauma-related disorders including anxiety, depression, grief, addiction, and more.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation, usually through eye movements, to activate the part of the brain that processes memory and emotion, and the part that stores it in our minds and body. This facilitates the brains natural ability to heal itself, allowing your mind to adopt new healthier beliefs about your experiences in less than half the time of traditional talk therapy.

This means you’ll spend less time stuck in the past, and more time in the present, creating and living a life that you will love.

How Does EMDR Work?

How Does EMDR Work?

Prior to reprocessing any negative memories or beliefs, your EMDR therapist will invest time into thorough preparation for treatment.

This includes exploration of your emotional and social history and clarification of your treatment goals. Your therapist will also emphasize development of strong coping mechanisms to help you regulate your nervous system, stop negative thoughts, and navigate challenging situations.

You and your therapist will then collaborate to identify the most effective and comfortable form of bilateral stimulation for the reprocessing of negative memories and thoughts.

During reprocessing you may feel like you have one foot in the past which can feel scary or intimidating. Your preparation will ensure that you have a foundation to confront these memories head on.

Throughout reprocessing you can expect lots of checking and encouragement from your therapist.

Don’t worry! EMDR is challenging, but treatment will always take your pace. We can slow down to make sure that you are stabilized throughout reprocessing, and I’ll be cheering you on along the way.

Who can benefit from EMDR

Weekly EMDR

EMDR can be conducted through weekly scheduled appointments to target several negative memories and beliefs impeding your mood and functioning. Weekly EMDR is more effective than the traditional model of weekly talk therapy because it allows you to replace a larger amount of trauma responses with healthier thoughts and beliefs in just one, single hour.

EMDR Intensives

When weekly therapy is not an option, whether due to your schedule or the intensity of your need for relief, EMDR Intensives are great choice! Intensive programs significantly increase the speed of trauma healing, while reducing the time commitment to your treatment. EMDR Intensives require a commitment of just 3-4 days for drastic reduction of trauma symptoms.

FAQs About EMDR

  • The price of EMDR Therapy varies depending on the program chosen. Click Here for more information on our Fees.

  • Online EMDR Therapy is equally effective online as it is when conducted in-person. However, this may not be true if you are found to be inappropriate for online mental health care due to physical or neuro-divergent limitations.

  • This will vary depending on the program selected and the intensity and urgency of your needs.

A full treatment of weekly EMDR is typically 12 sessions, however, some clients with complex or chronic trauma symptoms tend to extend treatment to address multiple issues. Extension of treatment also means long lasting mental health improvement, increased resilience, healthier thought processes, and overall improvement in physical wellness and daily functioning.

  • Recovery achieved from EMDR is long lasting, however, it may not be permanent for some people, depending their unique circumstances. This includes but is not limited to one’s history of mental health symptoms, physical health, environment, supports, and use of healthy coping mechanisms and ongoing self-care.

Some people may benefit from incorporating EMDR sessions into their routine mental health care plan in order to maintain progress.

  • Absolutely! If you already have a therapist that you love, you are welcome to explore incorporating an Intensive Program or Adjunct EMDR Therapy into your mental health care plan.

  • EMDR is not hypnotism. Hypnotism is typically conducted with the eyes closed using techniques to induce an altered state of physical and mental consciousness. This makes the client more receptive to the clinicians suggested thoughts, behaviors, and emotions. The client does not engage as much in the healing process as with EMDR.

EMDR uses eye movements to help clients attune to their mental and physical bodies, while recalling and reprocessing their own negative experiences and feelings. EMDR increases one’s conscious tolerance of discomfort, so that they can gain new and healthy ways of thinking about the past, present, and future. This effectively helps to reduce disassociation, avoidance, and harmful behaviors when faced with adversity.

  • Unfortunately EMDR is not like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. You will retain your memories, old and new, good and bad. EMDR will help you reprocess bad memories in a healthier way, which means less internalization, reduced anxiety, improved mood and functioning, and little to no rumination over the past.
